Another option is just to cut them as low as you need to, to get access to fix the fence - easier than digging them out, and they might resprout into something you really like.

I am often puzzled by modern life.
My neighbour has wind chimes in the back garden - we don't hear them unless we are out there and usually as far up the garden as the greenhouse.. .something quite nice about hearing them tinkle...

Any update on how these went, Jungle Jane? The ones producing fruit before leaves is a classic fig cutting thing, they put energy into fruiting before bothering with roots. Usually a good sign...

I used to have a Sumac tree in a previous garden. I did actually like it but it certainly likes to travel !! Not ideal for the average garden but makes an impressive roadside avenue.
