Cacti and Succulents

I wonder if the slugs were already in the compost when you had it @Victoria ? or maybe their eggs . If they were then anything you do to stop them won't work. Maybe it would be a good idea to change the compost.

Thank you, it's very small. I haven't seen it flowering before so it was a nice surprise.

The strange thing about it was it always just looked like a dead spiney stick, but within a day of watering it would suddenly start growing leaves.

@kindredspirit, I am definitely going to put them in the greenhouse as I need my window sills to bring on my seedlings.

I used to have the two but the bupleurifolia one died and I can't find another. I may have to try on line.

She said she was going to try both methods. I will let you know. I only know her in another forum so I'll have to ask her next time I go on it.

YnneadI have three and just use multi compost. As @pete says, mine live outdoors permanently but I do lose leaves in the Winter, although I don't get frost or even get near zero.Jatropha multifida

Never discard anything from succulents I just stuck the flowering stem of an aeonium rosette in this pot and starved it of water all winter.

I have one, it has survived the last two winters in my unheated greenhouse and will soon flower.

No @Emerion . It sits in the same pot either on an unused wooden bench or the low stone wall which separates patio from lawn. I pretty much leave the cactus to its own devices once it's outside. Slugs are in the borders and only the occasional one strays on to the patio !

Well I wouldn'y like to guess really, Orange rot as I've heard is terminal usually, so I hope it isn't that, but I dont know what it could be. Rust usually leaves an orange stain on your fingers. Only other problem I'm finding is scab.

There are two varieties of C. ovata with different leaf shapes to the 'normal' one. One variety has been named 'Golum' and the other 'Hobit'. They seem to have elongated leaves. I believe Golum has cup shapes ends to the leaves and Hobit has spoon shaped leaves. I have several Golums myself,...

You can’t keep a good cactus down! Re. My poor neglected specimen, I have some cactus compost so will try adding some of that with some extra grit. Thank you for the advice!

Maybe the problem with the weak-looking shoots is that it's in too warm a place. The winter is dark, and succulents need a cool place with little or no water, because they should become dormant. Growing in the dark winter will lead to elongated weak shoots.
