Cacti and Succulents

It's when you turn a pot out and you see white patches in the compost where it's touched the pot sides. I didn't realise they were a different type of Mealy bug @Michael Hewett .I've never actually managed to find the actual insect in the soil I've only seen the white patches.

I have / had Escheceria secunda. I say have / had because I am getting rid of all my small succulents.

Little way of an update, managed to take two cuttings from the droopy cactus and a few leaves, and all have rooted . Only one leaf from the other succulent took root but they’re all looking good and should have a few more cactus to add to my collection

Pete Last year I took a three-foot top cutting from a very large and unwieldy Pilosocereus azureus ; left it to callous for five-months , whereupon adventitious roots were developing . Potted up and is now growing as normal . The resilience of plants is amazing .

It times like these that I don't regret not continuing to try to beat our climate and grow somewhat tender plants however appealing they may be. There are so many gorgeous plants which are hardy it is a bit conkers/often causes disappointment to try too many tender things with a climate that can...

The species from the South Western Cape area, tend to be a bit more tolerant of cooler conditions. But I would still keep them above frost free - 5*C at least to be safe The ones from the Eastern part of SA, and further north want it warmer. And the ones from the Northern Cape, a lot drier

Its the kind of scent that is not that great if you put your nose in the flower, but when its in the air on a warm night its quite pleasant.

Yes there's lots of very weak spindly growth which will need removing

What appears to have happened is the new growth has grown by sucking the moisture from the bottom part of the plant, I'm thinking the bottom part has no living roots so its shrivelled in the process.I've laid cacti cuttings on the bench in the greenhouse to callous over the cut surface, and...
