Thanks all. After almost total breakdown, my son and I got together on Sunday via remote assistance and gave my computer a complete overhaul. After five hours working on it - it's now up and running again.

Ran the usual scans by MSE, AVG.Spybot and no infections found. Ran Ccleaner which 'fixed' the Registry problems it found, but with no significant speed up of anything. Also have Scotty on the machine which prevents any unauthorised changes to the machine.
