If they have GOT to go out then there is nothing you can do. However, just stick in 2 foot sticks to help them get started and the plastic / fleece is easier to drape over than an 8 foot cane which can be stuffed in later. Cheers, Tony.

"Roots" generally don't, but I've not had any trouble with Beetroot (or Celeriac & Swede), but I only grow Parsnips in newspaper pots that I can plant out "whole", and although I did that once for Carrots it was too much faff, so I sow them direct now.

I sow mine direct.....one every three inches....give um a good talking to and fully expect every one to come up perfectly...so no thinning required...i've been lucky so far...they've all done as they are told..... works for me

Well, they are easy to come by so you can afford to take a few chances with them. I think I've got some growing near a N facing fence with overhanging shrubs but I can't swear that they don't get some dappled light.

Well, they did try 37 different varieties, lolimac, but only handed out awards to those mentioned, I'm afraid. Having said that there's a lot of good varieties out there without an RHS award but get sown because gardeners like them.
