I grew parsnips last yr and they were lovely.I dug the soil a while back where they were and there was still loads of manure surfacing.I`m not complaining but,I don`t get it.I think that maybe if you get canker on your parsnips,carrots etc.,maybe the canker is already in the soil?I read it can...

I wish I could grow Toms outside, tried on a few occasions when I have ran out of room in the greenhouse but its just too cold here on the east coast. :(

Stoko you could plant them out as soon as the soil is dry and warm enough, maybe around the end of march or so

Little d you could add lots of manure, compost etc. to try abd improve this part of the plot. Potatoes and brassicas may do well in this part and the potatoes will help break up the soil.

I saw the Gardeners World programme when it was first shown three years agoI tried the cradle method but didn't allow for the increased weight when the soil was wet and the plants had grown.. the supports for the cradles gradually sank into the soil... needless to say I have now resorted to...

hi can any fruit trees be trained to grow up a fence or do they have to be a certain type?I got two from lidle and would like to grow them up the fence if poss. thanx ..daz

It works too. I did it the year we moved here, and i'd potted the trees ready for transportation. But summer came before the signing of the contract. The only problem was hubby. he could reach under the net. :eek:

I think the secret is weak earth (no manure), sieved and mixed with sand. Then put this mixture in pipes and they'll be fine.To get more carrots, I'm trying on the flat ground this year with a few different varieties so we'll see.

Hi BH,and welcome to GC.Last year wasn't a very good year for spuds on our allotment because of the heat.The spuds we did dig up were quite small due to the lack of moisture.Perhaps that was the problem with yours. What you need to do is make sure that the roots are kept well watered and fed...

Marmande is only recommended for outdoor growing, and its best not to stop the side shoots, just let it get on with it.

Scotkat - Our blueberry is starting to show signs of growth so I suggest you get yours potted up fairly soon. Don't forget that you should use ericacious compost.

Just a thought, Bunslip, were the seeds viable (in other words fresh) in the first place? If they were it's probably down to being too wet as Kandyfloss said coupled,maybe,with being too cold - the cooler they're kept the less moisture they need.
