It looks like the species Salvia splendens (ie the one that occurs in the wild), rather than a cultivar. The Species can grow up to 9 feet tall in Brazil, I have had them up to 5 feet in the UK. I think the cultivars were developed from this and to me are rather squat and vulgar.I have...

It does spread by root run but is not too difficult to keep under control. We have a whole bed of them (Mrs Shiney uses them for flower arranging) and just keeping a wary eye out for the roots seems to work OK.

That would explain why the birds around here are always so mellow and laid back... :peace:

If your cuttings don't take or over winter you can buy them in spring very cheaply as plug plants. This site sells 70 for £15.00
