It's a type of fly that makes them holes I'm sure of it. We get them at work every year around the same time in the same place. It's always where there is bare soil they burrow.

I agree with the others. We have it in our garden and we like it. Make sure you keep it under control as it can get quite rampant if it likes the conditions it's in. Pruning before seeding is a good idea and keeping it pruned back to the size you want is also good.

You'll need to collect them as they're unlikely to survive a British winter.

Depends on what you call a true blue, Anthony. So there's Aurwens Violet, Purple Passion but the ones I showed Adam were from package labels and they are notoriously out of colour kilter.

A quick update.We have spent this morning pruning out the dead tips off the apple tree, and back along any split branches, all the pruned branches have been burnt "with tongues of cleansing fire," -upwind of the fruit trees, the secateurs, loppers and pruning saw disinfected, disinfectant...

Ah excellent many thanks for that, now I've seen your photo I remember buying them last year lol.They left me pretty unimpressed as they all turned brown and died shortly after planting. Probally why I forgot about it

This was ours tree in South Wales...taken in the autumn 28th Oct 2011. It flowered for the first time just as we put the house up for sale...so we never saw it in its full magnificence.

A quick google suggests that they are tough as old boots, so I will be on the attack tomorrow. Thanks again @Silver surfer

Hello It looks like Spiraea 'Goldflame'. Has beautifully coloured leaves and flat heads of dusty pink flowers.
