Agree with previous replies: Penstemon 'Garnet'; synonym P. ‘Andenken an Friedrich Hahn’. I've had it in my garden for 25 years, when other varieties have been short-lived!

We unfortunately have it all over our garden. Yes it is easy to pull if you pull when it is still young. When you look at what feeds on it we have most of them in our garden but we have never noticed any leaf damage. Just wish they would. @BobTG surprised as well to find it is in the evening...

Thanks for that, @Angie Jones (nut). Some photos on Google fit the bill for sure, especially the flower stalks. Here's some more photos, as I like this plant, which has done especially well this year - ditto all of our lavenders, irrespective of type or age. I've got to wonder if all the rain...

I use multi purpose compost with grit added. I don't measure it, I just add a handful of grit to make it drain better. You could also use a succulent/cactus compost. Mine loose leaves too, I don't know why, and the base of the stems are bare. Maybe that's the way they grow.

Leaves and flowers are edible, if you have enough. Will seed in UK conditions. Can be milled or roasted wholeseeds

thank you for all the info, i was hoping to grow the Joop Lilly in my garden as I recently lost my dog of 15 years who’s name is Joop. it may sound silly but thought it would be a good way to honour him, again thanks for all the info really appreciate it

Thanks for the tip. I will try my seeds then in Autumn. I did it in March and nothing came up....

That's the kind of plant that gives a little colour when you lawn is burnt to a crisp in the middle of summer - if we get one. I'm happy to leave them in my grassy patch.
