    No, they are normal perennials - although the roots are quite fleshy.The flowers will keep coming if you let them - I just pull off the individual flowers after they go over.

    At least with the Spiraea you can prune it to the ground in Spring to stop it getting too big. Ours not only spreads by suckers, it seeds everywhere too!
