Val, the flower is similar to Winston Churchill but not the leaves, I'll try and get a pic of a young plant I have at work showing the leaf colour.

Hi cruiser, my first thought is obviously something has self seeded..As they are seedlings... Do you have many plants around your lawn that are self seeding for starters..? Could it be seeds from one of them or any annuals you grew last year that have seeded.. To me at present they do...

Looks like Escallonia from what I can make out, but as mentioned a close up of the leaves would be good . Dave

Spent all day trying to get the cranesbill out, what a nightmare! The roots are horrible. Still a load left and I think I will be pulling it out for years to come. Not a plant I would recommend for the garden.

They could be Japanese bunching onions rather than true jibbons, ( sorry, spring onions ) lol

Thanks for clearing that up Aesculus, I should have guessed it was from one of your outings.Sorry you are disappointed about the 'plant' Angelina. I think the nearest places you will find Heliconias and Torch Gingers growing outside are Madeira and the Canaries.Pleomele (Song of India)...

My ground is coastal, sandy and windy, apparently everything it doesn't like. The arboretum is a few miles away and sheltered. Believe me, on the island everything can change just a street away, even the weather, so it wouldn't surprise me if the soil there is completely different.
