You can get non palatable ones, I don't think any are inedible. I could be wrong, but the pink coloured leaves suggest an ornamental variety to me.

These definitely come out of the ground. But you may well be right. It makes sense if they're the cherry tree's original form/variety. The cherry tree has been there about 20 years.

Hello Lisa, welcome to GC Pete's right, it's Sambucus or elderberry. I'm afraid it's not entirely benign, though. It will become a big tree left to it's own devices. Birds spread the berries around, so you could end up with a lot more than one. It sounds as though it's in a tricky position...

That's a different milkweed @CanadianLori, the plant the Monarch butterfly eats is in the Ascepias family. The weed identified in this thread is in the Euphorbia family. Both share the same common milkweed name
