That is one of the Eryngiums, probably agavifolium.We have it as a lawn weed.

If you dont like them, they are weeds, if you do, they are plants. Deciede yourself if you want them or not.

I've grown a few over the years and the hardiness seems to vary. Some plants can be killed by frost ,next to others that survive OK. I agree with the nooks and crannies thing, they really do seem to grow better and survive better if they are struggling just a bit.

Ahh!! Thank Rodders very much! As I say, i don't think I've ever seen it before! It is rather a beauty, we devided a clump last autumn and now have 4 small plants against the fence at the front between us and neighbours. It will look a lovely divider between the 2 gardens when it grows. Just...
