Ravenmad, instead of an Acer go for Liquidamber, it has the same shape of leaf, the same Autumn colours but is a lot hardier. David.

Good link John never seen it before nice plant, you have got to be hard to thrive in Yorkshire I may give it a try.

Thanks guys! thats great info. If thats what it is and it could flower in spring then I'll keep it where it is I think. I'm going to clear way everwhere is gorwing new plants though I think. I was thinking of putting a jasmine next to it up against our tool shed.

If the flowers and the leaves on the two plants are indeed identical, then LoL's hypothesis is probably correct. I wasn't putting forward an alternative to be bloody minded, just for further consideration.

Thanks both, I've had another look and I think it's the Eleagnus. Quite pleased as it will grow in shade.

I wasn't sure afterwards as you said it had light green leaves as solanum usually are mid to dark green but a variegated one might be lighter green. I have not seen one so I am not really familiar this particular type. I am not sure if they are as winter hardy as the green one.

The dwarf conifer could be almost anything. The cyclamen is Cyclamen persicum. They say it is hardy, but the first frost will wipe it out!

Sarra, I like to see spiders in the garden, like worms they are working for us in the background, if, however, you want to get rid of them you would have to use an acharicide. Insecticides will not work, and I have never known a retailer who sold acharicides. David.
