    Yes, that's it (I would never have guessed)! I didn't think it could have been grafted, but there you go...... you learn every day. It makes sense, there are 5 or 6 shoots right around the base....

    Its got a waxy coat which stops anything soaking in, which is why you have to crush it first :)

    The tree is a Field Maple Acer campestre and can grow to quite a size if the roots are not confined and branches trimmed.. Not a tree for a raised bed Or close to a house, hence its name..

    You are right strongylodon :)Sally, the grit is available from garden centres, DIY stores, etc. A small bag prob costs £3 or so and you only enough to surface cover the soil in pots. :)
