Identification Area

Spotted this little patch of fungi which has just erupted in the garden in the past couple of days.Quite unusual to see something like this in mid summer, conditions here have been dry for weeks now and these are growing in a very dry spot underneath a large firethorn. Any ideas?

They don't grow here either.Or so I thought, never having seen them around here before, but out walking this morning found a couple of plants in bloom beside a ditch and they were growing in the pure clay that had been dug out and dumped along the banks.

That's the outfit! I substitute rubber gloves, though Could have done with that yesterday when pulling up old annual stalks.....there were three big wasps nests lurking amongst them. Got a hand the size of a football today..war has been declared!

I like to move shrubs and trees and also plant new bare-root ones in the autumn, say late October/November - that gives them time to get their roots re-established before they need to start growing again. But again, take a look at this advice from the RHS which gives you a wider timeframe,...

They are ground beetles and they are good guys - they eat slugs! I have a few coming into house too at the moment - could be looking for moisture.

Hi All. Thanks for your input. Got to admit Mimulus was not what I was thinking off. Interesting they are perennials not annuals so will let them do their thing then take some root cuttings before transplanting to a permanent position. Good tip about leaving 2 inch gap for water.

I also have a ton of them. thinned out a bunch last year, and this year. still they are huge .mine are just the simple ones. a great tough plant. I gave up long ago to trying to remember variety names of stuff, too much.
