Well it would help if you knew what it is a lid to, but thinking about it why not make a wooden box planter on short legs to stand over it and build your little Zen garden in that.. Just a thought as you would be able to move it off if needed.. Something like this perhaps.. Planter Vegetable...

Lovely photos as usual @wiseowl You might find it very difficult to see the Nightingale Wiseowl as they are well know to be elusive as they tend to keep scuttling about in the bushes which are normally quiet dense and they are quiet a shy bird even though they have such a beautiful song.
