I agree with Loofah,A plant needs its foliage to breathe through. If you cut everything off it will die.That method would work if you were doing it during the Winter, dormant season, as long as they're not evergreens.

It`s also easy to divide when clump gets too big.

Steve, as you are getting rid of the plant don`t worry too much about the roots. Just dig around the plant and cut the roots.

I'm in Doncaster The shrub wasn't growing and leaves were turning brown. Can you give me any tips on replanting? Is it hole slightly deeper and wider than pot, then do I mix multipurpose compost in hole.

Now is the perfect time to transplant them. Unless it's a really harsh Winter they should keep their younger leaves. Rust is an airborne fungus so there's nothing you can really do to prevent it.

@Anthony Rogers , mine was like that last year . Just seems to be stunted and sickly this year . I am sure Tesco or Asda will have the little standard salix on offer again next spring. They are very popular these days

Thanks. We've talked it over and have decided to compromise on the size and have a gap between our fence and the greenhouse. Like you mentioned John, hubby pointed out that there needs to be room for maintenance etc. Looks like something smaller but that's better than nothing!

For indoor use it should work well, although you might have to re-stick it in a year or two. Outdoors in the cold and the wet.........not so good.
