I still need to prune several rose bushes ... am waiting for the forsythia to bloom (thats what I was taught i.e. prune rose bushes when the forsythia start blooming?)

Rose cuttings - suckers??
That is a very specific way to look at it... the root stock could be any kind of rose although most likley something like rosa rugosa, suckers coming from a root stock are likley to be strong...

...Update.....well after the incredibly mild winter we've had (so far!! :D), my little roses are still in full leaf and are starting to produce suckers around the base......., looks like they're...

Why are rose suckers a problem?
Thanks wiseoldowl, very helpful!... I will investigate by the light of day when I get a chance. The flower on my potential sucker is bright yellow - identical to the flowers on the bush itself...
