Squirrels ae renowned for problem solving to get to nuts so not sure a net would work unless it covered the whole tree and then tied around the trunk but it would need a massive strong net and would spoil the look of the treeI would hang a bird feeder up and hope the treat of nuts not in...

Mmmm I have the same problem with a neighbours sycamore. However there are some lovely rowans/sorbus - there is one I want for my woodland bit of garden, which is small but fabulous leaf and fruit colour in the autumn and winter. Maybe next year

I'm a bit out of touch, now but James Grieves is or was the best to have, if you have a few Apple trees, but check in your near nighbourhood....if anyonne has already one in their garden....then you can get another variety and got your neighbour's tree will pollinate all your trees too......

Thanks to all re my conifers I had them all trimmed by the garden doctor his charge was �£50 for six at the rear and four at the front. they look good and the birds are flying in and out all day. happy days to all Poppy

there are 5 stems each about 14ft tall,its next to a conifer and a couple of the branches now go through the conifer so it looks quite good against the dark green,but i would like it to be a bit bushier if thats possible.im also gowing to try growing some of the seeds this year.

Its just another thought But maybe if growing elm was in effect banned, outside botanic garden etc. for a number of years, would the beetle and the disease die out? Any thoughts?

No they are still maintaining their shape, just with these small spots on them. The main worry I had was the branches that were dying.

Laburnum is deciduous and doesn't give dense shade, so any shrub that doesn't need full sun will do fine, subject to being kept well watered until established. For autumn and winter interest, your probably looking at autumn leaf colour or stems. Take a look at the dogwoods and acers.

Our local council are pretty good at creating dead trees, either they plant them and forget about them, or they strip the bark at the base with a strimmer. Still it keeps them in a job.

Maybe your neighbours fed them a little "something extra"!! Remove all of the branches,fix wire supports and plant climbers. I did just that and have a beautiful, mixed variety,flowering hedge for most of the year. During the winter the evergreen Honeysuckles provide the cover.
