We have gravel under a couple of our apple trees and there are no problems with it, other than cleaning off the fallen leaves i autumn/winter.

The main danger with willows is the roots seek out water pipes, sewage pipes etc and get in them. Either yours or your neighbours. Whichever you end up with the hefty bill.

Yes I agree with Tropical Don't prune Japanese maples unless there is a purpose ........ They will put on growth when the root system gets settled

You really need to get yourself one of the RHS books on Fruit tree growing and pruning and pests and diseases. There are an awful lot of things to know about looking after fruit trees. For example brown patches and holes in leaves could be Bacterial canker, in which case removal of the affected...

Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae is a possibility but only just. So just in case it is that watch very carefully and, when you can see the affected twigs, as well as the leaves, if there are signs of the twigs being affected then get VERY busy with the secateurs which should be regularly dipped...

Thankyou for all the suggestions......I think I'm going to try all of them....something is bound to be successful. I'm really keen to try one from seed, I love growing things from seed! Who knows, I may end up with a fig tree plantation if all these methods succeed! :eek:

I haven't had a chance to go through my specific book but just looked at what you've suggested. I would never have guessed Eucalyptus. I think you've got it in one ... yet again. Thank you.I didn't know there was a red-flowering one. My book says they bloom August-December and grow 6-15...

Hi Maplewood and welcome. I agree with Fonzie go for bamboo, specificlly Phyllostachys, you can have gold, green or black. And it should do the job you want quite quickly. However, it can be invasive so you would have to keep an eye on it and manage it properly. David.

Mine is still young It is supposed to mature at about 10 feet high and just as wide (according to Vertrees) You can, of course, prune to keep it smaller (Japanese maples take fairly well to pruning)

Hi yewandme and welcome, the Beech hedge can be cut back now as you want it without too much problem. the conifers, however, cannot be cut back into old wood. If you go back beyond the green needles, ie into the brown wood, then they will not rejuvinate. David.
