Worried cherry blossom tree damaged / dying

Wanted to say the same. If cut at the base ivy dies, it only attaches itself to the tree. It's how council treats ivy that tries to climb old "london planes" in the park next to me.

What's wrong with the tree? Bark split

I was thinking possibly the ants maybe farming aphids higher up, but agree if there is sap oozing then they are probably just drinking the sap.Either way they won't be harming the tree directly.

My fire wood is letting shoots out, can i root them?

I think you might be onto a hiding to nothing but if it was me I would bury that log just below the surface and keep the area damp, perhaps pull off a few shoots and leave about three strong ones.
