What should I do with this cherry tree?
Plums, cherries etc best time to prune is June and July. They are prone to Silver Leaf a fungal disease see here Silver leaf I've not seen it on apple trees though.

I agree with Pete the only thing i would add is remove the grass from the base of the tree ...you will be surprised how much water it takes up in the summer and nutrients
