Nick, if there`s no sign of aphids, then the plant possibly has leaf curl virus. Not a lot you can do about it, but it shouldn`t harm the fruit.

I always thought they were deep rooted and less of a problem. I have two in the garden, one of which is about 2 metres from the house. They grow fine in the UK and respond well to heavy spring pruning.

If you cut it hard back every year for the foliage over here I doubt it would survive...!! :D

If the ground is fertile there's no need to add any fertilizer or top dressing when the tree is planted. As long as you leave a humus layer which will rot down and feed the tree you should be alright. Adding blood, fish and bone certainly won't harm the tree.

If the roots haven't ventured out into the surrounding soil then no harm whatsoever can be done by digging it up When you say that it is 'not growing any at all' I am assuming that to be the case At the end of the day, the choice is yours

Same is happening here - lots of marble sized fruits dropping all over the lawn and paths. Creating a right mess but all of the larger fruits seem to be staying put.

May I thank the members who gave me advice when my Butterfly Acer lost its variegated colouring. Vegman was quite correct - after placing the Acer in shade ,the variegation is slowly getting back in to the leaves. Many thanks.
