Survival of the fittest is the way of it for weeds - if they cannot grow rapidly in the face of adversity, they do not survive. You can get some shade loving plants that might thrive under the tree, but I suspect that you would never be done watering and feeding them.

It's been there seven years.

Can't remember the name (if I ever knew it), just get a tall growing variety. And when the flowers look like getting above nose height layer some cuttings and start some fresh plants. The flowers on mine are now about 12 feet up and not so noticeable as I walk past morning/evening.

Interesting, thanks Whis4ey. I was assuming that bog standard Japanese maples (rather than "poncy" ones) would be easy to propagate, but if seed is the only easy way that explains why they do them in that way. Blast! Thought I was onto a winner for a moment!

Should be able to see the graft - it will be a thickened part of the stem, and usually only an inch or two above the ground - about strimming height in fact :(
