Yesterday while out and about, I came across what I think is a very, very mature Scots Pine. In the junction between two of its massive branches there was a baby oak tree growing. That will produce an interesting result in a century or so.

Privets have escaped into the wild here.. but they make attractive enough small trees and provide birds with black berries in the winter. Many people around here have given up using them as hedges and have let them go.. so now there are more Lingustrum trees than any other tree! I find...

I have a Cordyline, obviously it has sheaths where the leaves have been cut or dropped off previously. I noticed there is grass growing in the gaps where the leaves were cut off previously.. is this a bad sign? Or fairly normal for grass to find its way into spaces when a plant is still growing?

If the ground is rock hard, can we take it its clay? I think hawthorn doesn't like compacted clay. I also wonder if you can save the dying trees by cutting them back severely. Hawthorn responds very well indeed to brutal pruning, but I suspect at 3 years old they may not be ready for that yet.

I had similar issue so I used willow screening, not a complete block out, but enough to make it more private

In my quest to try and get a few tree's into my garden, i came across this site. I bought Sorbus "Autumn Spire" from a garden centre last year and this is where it was from. Its very interesting and informative with easy to read symbols regarding planting.

Victoria, I think it's been there for few years but so it's probably settled in already. It's only options are to be killed or moved so if moving it kills it at least the foundations will be ok. There's a plant nursery close by, (the other end of the field) that grows conifers so I might go...
