Googling, as you do, I turned up some hybrid Willow and Poplars used for coppicing primarily (well, "short rotation firewood cropping" might be more accurate) The Willow looks like it suckers massively, which would make it quite wide I think (and thus not really suitable), of the two Poplars...

Early morning till lunch and that's only say 6ft of the 'hedge'...after that it's not total shade but i still not sure there would be enough light

Thats a fairly severe rust problem you have there! Hover up all the leaves and burn them; remove a bit of the topsoil around the area and replace with new soil and give a very decent mulch. RHS has some info too - see the chemical treatment bit.

I brought back some Palm (Canary) seeds from South Africa. All I did was put them in 70% sand 30% compost, added water then put in my hot water cupboard for 2 weeks (nice and hot in there). They do not need light to germinate. The larger and greener (fresher) the seed the higher the germination...

They'll get thicker as they grow, I reckon its only if you need more "width" than they naturally form that you need to pinch them out. its tricky ... they only grow a few inches a year, so any pinching out is going to slow them down ... but make for a thicker final plant. If you reckon width...

Great stuff Dave. There was a Pear Tree on the back of Mells Manor that we had to try to plaster round, found a metal lable on it about 30 foot up with a date about 1845. It was a huge tree.

Not sure it would keep your son out? They tend to be more "trip over" rather than "clamber over" However, they do make an obvious "edge" to a garden, and thus he might well realise he has to go "round" rather than "over" I was a bit sceptical about Monty saying that you can take a "Maiden"...
