You dont say where you are growing these plants.Its not a plant I have tried, but being of desert extraction it will need strong sun and heat in summer, probably dry in winter and cool but frost free.

David it looks bad, have you had some hard frost since the buds broke?If you prune back to a lower bud, I doubt that stem will flower this year, but there is not much else you can do.
