It's not a good looking specimen - if you want to keep it then I would be tempted to cut it down to just above fence height (especially the larger upright stems at the rear - they can go completely!) and watch it regrow. Regularly keep in check with trimming and it should bush out into something...

The Malus (crab apple) is to mature now to change it's shape, even as a young tree it would have been difficult. I also don't think topping the conifer will make a lot of difference either. It's your choice whether you remove it or not, if nothing else it will let more light into your garden.

A number of varieties and crosses offer up pink, or otherwise tinted, flowers and do not set seed. Some pinks do set seed. You'll have to find out what species/variety/hybrid the tree is before you'll know whether it will bare fruit or not.

Winter wash, next winter once the leaves have dropped, but they could try other insecticides now, or once the crawler stage starts.

I think the best time to do it is mid summer so the the wounds dont allow silver leaf disease in which slowly kills the tree. Ive done one this summer with another to do next summer.hard trees to shape.
