Could always get someone in who specialises in fruit trees I guess to prune it for best effect next year? I know its a cost, but im not expert enough to advise anything, just what my brother did...

Airies, welcome to the site. Is your plant an Abies? Is it a rooted plant? If it is, I would say, pot it on in an ericaceous compost. If rooted it should grow quite happily.
