As aphids breathe through their skin, a spray of soapy water (i.e. washing up liquid) can block their pores and cause the little green blighters to suffocate and die. Alternatively you could also try other methods of biological control as mentioned here:Hope this helps, Matthew

Thank you everyone. Kristen you have it exactly right. It is hard for me to get a granular feed around the plants. Because they were very large when planted (the trees 5mtrs plus) they took a while to get established and I feel they now need a regular boost. I have a couple that still look...

My M. Stellata hasn't got any leaves as yet though (and I don't think the leaves in the photo look like magnolia leaves)
