It's just been announced that in Birmingham since the referendum cases of racial abuse have gone up by 57% compared to the same period of last month.

Even a BBC reporter was followed and told to get on the next plane home as she was doing an outside broadcast.

If it was means tested and you didn't get anything then that means you had savings of over £16,000. Why should the state pay for someone who has savings of that amount.

If there are two adults in a family then there are two people who can work.

I think one of the additional problems we have, Lori, is that there is a substantial number of immigrants who have overstayed their time limit, and added to that another substantial number who's validity to enter the country was questioned at Border Control, let through after being asked to report back within 48 hours...........and who have disappeared into the masses:dunno:

With all due respect, Anthony, that is the speech of a Single man talking about the problems a family faces when a person, and wage earner, in that family is made redundant and jobs are non-existent. If only your simple reply was that simple.:dunno:

No Armandii, it doesn't matter how many people live in a house or whatever.

I could argue that why should I pay the same amount of rent, electricity, water, community charge and everything else as the same property with two or more occupants living in it.

The only extra costs are food and clothing. Food is cheap enough if you don't shop in the likes of the big supermarkets. And, if children are involved there are child benefit and tax credits available.

As for jobs, even my mom has commented on the amount of jobs that are being advertised in shoos etc. But, I suppose like fruit picking they are considered menial and too low fir many English to do.

I haven't caught up with everyone's posts so I apologise if this has already been said! I'm utterly disgusted with the racist attacks on the polish community :wallbanging:. For the grace of God, The polish are actually on the whole very hard working people! I can't understand why ignorant English people have to behave like this :gaah: to say I'm furious is the understatement of the year!

(I feel so much resentment towards English people who don't know how to behave  or how to treat other human beings )

I worry about what is happening to the country. Not only an international or political level, but a social level, which I guess is political in a way.

I worry that we're on the verge of a sort of 'civil cold war'.

It seems to me, that of the 52% that voted leave, maybe 1% might have done so for racist reasons. I don't know that. I can't know that. It's just a guess based on stuff I've read, and discussions I've had.

I would also guess that of those that voted remain, some large percentage did so without having done any research of their own, choosing to vote for what they saw as the status quo, out of nothing more than fear of change and the unknown.

That fear has led to some highly irrational responses. That's the thing about fear. It destroys your very soul if you let it.

One of those irrational responses is to start insulting people who voted for the change they are so terrified of. Another common response to fear is to band together with those you perceive to be in the same boat. So a headline suggests that 52% of people are racist. So many of the 48% decide that's what it is, it's a fight against the rise of the racists. It's like a call to arms. It's easier to turn nasty at your friend, or your neighbours, than it is to think about the terrifying unknown rumblings in Europe and beyond.

Trouble is, they spread the hate, by drawing attention to a different kind of hate. And those accused feel threatened by this.

Of course there are racist people. Of course some of those racists will be capitalising on recent events. And of course victims should report what's happening. But one of the things they remain bunch argued was that our human rights might be at risk. One of those human rights is innocent until proven guilty and the right to a fair trial. Not trial by social media. In other words, the police should be dealing with assaults and threats. The rest of us should be endeavouring to keep the peace.

When I was a kid, I was told the best way to deal with a bully is to ignore them. I don't fully agree with that, but I agree with it if there is no physical threat, because if there's one thing a bully thrives on it is attention.

Oh yes, we have visitors who melt into the background too. And they wouldn't get away with it if we were not already very demographically diverse. It is a component of being civilized, well, for the most part :)

When I visit next year, I'll be a good girl and get on my scheduled flight home. I won't go rogue and run around flinging maple syrup on everybody's flapjacks and sofa surfing :heehee:

Well, I can only say that a lot of people supporting their families would shake their heads and disagree with you, Anthony.

No, that's an invalid and unnecessary argument in the context of what we we discussing.:dunno:
