Then Nigel you need educating. ALL variegated plants have a viral infection which causes the striations. You say you are a scientist, yet you don`t know this fact?

I dont think its a total "fact"either Dai, for the reasons I've explained.
I'm no scientist I just chop up wood all day, but I think you have been slightly misled at some point.

And I deal with plants all day, Pete. And you are BOTH wrong. I am a trained horticulturist, and I have been dealing with plants for over 40 years.

Unfortunately I'm an electrochemist by training and an analyst by employment not a botanist.
Many animals show variegated patterning in their coats, tiger, zebra etc this is genetic not viral. Plants are similar, if the variegation is passed from generation to generation, consistent within the plant and regular then it is a genetic effect.

Nigel, as you may have noticed, this site is all about PLANTS not animals, and, in plants it is viral, NOT genetic. Pete, you and the scientist ARE wrong.

Can I just ask everyone to take a wee step back from their keyboards, and let's not end up falling out.

I refuse to take a step back. I am a hobby gardener. I must come and declare that I too have no clue. I must admit that I applaud everyone trying to step up and help and am ashamed that I cannot offer input.

I have decided that everyone is correct and all further arguments should be settled with duals at dawn using fronds of poison ivy.

I don't think the plant cares what you call it or its acne. Give it your own name. For example: I have a plant I call Deuteronomy because he is some kind of prayer plant? and then pamper it :)

And in the BLUE corner....................since neither side seems willing to agree I would think it reasonable and sensible to agree to disagree.:dunno::snorky: We don't often in the GC Gang let a discussion become an argument but when we do the actual thrust of the thread becomes a contest of strong opinion and perhaps stubbornness in which normally friendly, mature people let a discussion about a Virus become a Virus which destroys both sides of the opinions. So may I ask that we call it day.:love30::snorky:
