    I was probably thinking of Anya (PFA x Desiree cross), has anybody tried it?

      I'd give Anya a go if I could find some seed, the knobbly growth habit of PFA is probably its biggest downfall.

        Mrs Scrungee wasn't impressed when I presented her with half a sack of knobbly tubers, one favourable review of Anya and I'll give them a trial.

        My list for 2017 so far is:

        1) Kondor for big spuds (3lbs +)
        2) Picasso, again to get bigguns for competition, but more acceptable when brought home for the kitchen.
        3) Blue Belle, did well last year
        4) Amour, something new with a bit of colour
        5) Kestrel, my favourite spud
        6) Anya? (will check for reviews against PFA)
        7) Mayan Twylight? (don't really want to pay courier charges from N.I., so looking for somewhere selling closer to home).

        And this year I must avoid being tempted by bargain seed spuds that just give me a load of work, cost a fortune spraying against blight (and still get it), and still work out 10x more expensive than buying from supermarkets.

        @Scrungee , Anya is described by Suttons as an early variety, also it has the tag of Albert Bartlett added to it.
        Having bought Albert Bartlett spuds from the supermarket I cant say as I'm impressed by that name.

          Yes, + elsewhere described as 2nd early. I see anything that reduces time to harvest and exposure to blight as an advantage.

          A.B. have not been mentioned anywhere that I've been looking at them, for example Potato (Second Early) Anya £4.95 From Mr Fothergills Seeds

          No I guess that AB is supplying Suttons seeds, just the one site I have looked at.
          Suttons appear to have a pretty chaotic site these days, lots of pictures but when you have seen one runner bean you have seen most.:biggrin:

          £4.95 plus £4.95 postage, comes out a bit expensive.

              I got Anya last year. As above, PFA is waaay too much of a hassle for me to prepare because they are so knobbly. I personally don't bother buying PFA from the supermarket any more. Yield was OK in potato grow sacks, but I'm an inexperienced potato grower. And the taste is great for salads.
              That Mayan Twylight one looks to me (an uninformed viewer) like Apache sold in supermarkets by Albert Bartlett.

                @Scrungee yup, marker pens, plastic bags and little stickers, and a cunning tessellation strategy involving 2 different varieties comes in handy. Our local mega-GC does the 'all you can put in a bag' bulb and potato deal.

                  What exactly do you folks do when you prepare spuds, I just break up any multiple tubers, wash and boil.
                  At the end of the season, late spring, I tend to peal them once cooked, but that is made easier if you just cut off each end before boiling, the skin quite often comes off in one piece.

                    I grew Anya last year for the first time. It is less knobbly than PFA so is much easier to prepare. It hasn't quite got the same waxy texture and taste as PFA so I don't plan to grow it again. It did yield very well though, I have plenty still in the ground and am still digging them up. Had some over christmas.

                      That means Anya's out for me then as I particularly like the texture of PFA.
