OK, bit a back story here.

The family that was living two doors down until just over a week ago kept chickens in their back garden, with the coop attached to a shed. Their son was/is a pot-head, and frequently the street would stink of the stuff; he would smoke it out of his bedroom window mostly, despite his parents trying to ban him from smoking in the house - - how they didn't smell the stench when he was smoking is beyond me.

Anyway, a few days before they moved, he decided to have a smoke in the shed. Whether he dropped his cigarette butt, or a match, I have no idea but the upshot was that the shed caught fire. Neighbours that back on to their property (as well as next door and ours) effectively put the fire out with their garden hose, but not before most of the shed was destroyed along with the chicken coop, and I believe the adjoining fence also took a hit. Suffice to say that there was zero relationship left between the two households (apparently, this isn't the first time that the lad has caused grief for the neighbours behind).

The guy next door to us was able to knock them up a quick emergency shelter for the chickens, and they moved out a couple of days later taking the chickens with them.

Last week, I went into our outhouse and recognised 'that' smell instantly - mouse! Mrs C gutted the place and shampooed the carpet, to no avail.

Then, a day or so later, Mrs C opened the back kitchen door to see a mouse run the length of the alleyway and out into the driveway; later that day, my neighbour asked if we'd had any problems with mice in the past few days and explained what had happened with the fire, and how that had displaced the mice living under the shed. He told me he had them in his garage and his house, and even had one sat on his bedside table looking at him when he woke up in the morning! He had called out a specialist who had laid poison.

Well, the good news is that his poison seems to have worked - the bad news is that it appears that one of more of the mice has chosen to crawl into our outhouse to die. When I opened the door this morning, the smell is just awful.

So, I will obviously need to try and find the corpse(s), assuming of course that they are not inside walls etc, and then clean everything within an inch of its life. But - what can I do if I cannot find the corpse(s)? I assume they will dessicate eventually, but how long will that take, and for the stench to go?

May be a few months if no one eats him up like cat/fox/magpie etc, you're get the smell then maggots then flys

If you can't find it and you can leave the door open some one may come in for it
You can leave the door open to get rid of smell quicker or add some of your own smell to mask it

OH, my GOSH, lets hope no one eats them, they can die too. Bad part of poison for mice is they go and hide and die, their bodies start sticking . We use traps here, or let the cats deal with it. but catching them in a trap and tossing them is safer for other creatures that may indulge.

I have a feeling that they have went behind our freezer, presumably for the warmth. Plan currently is to use our old vacuum cleaner to have a good old ratch behind the freezer, behind the washing machine and under cupoards etc (if it sucks them up and ends up stinking, it can go to the tip as it barely works anyway); failing that, I will get help from MIL's boyfriend to haul the freezer out at the weekend, and we can then get to the walls.

Lovely leaving gift from our ex neighbours, eh?

I've never noticed any smell coming from dead mice, it's dead rats that stink.

I dont have dead ones, only live ones ;).
Apart from one occasion years ago when one mI leave anaged to get trapped under the kitchen units and I had to cut a hole to get it out, they dont come indoors around here.
There are a lot of cats around here that keep the numbers down, but often see the odd one scuttle across the garden.
I have smelt them in the garage in the winter, but as long as they behave I leave them to it.
