Think twice before buying from Harveys! :hate-shocked:

I help look after some disabled people and one of them needed a new sofa. I took him to Harveys as his last sofa was from them. We found what he wanted, delivery 16 weeks, and two weeks before the scheduled delivery I contacted them to explain the situation.

He lives in a small ground floor Council flat and the old sofa would need to be put outside in order to get the new one in. They had explained, when buying, that they no longer dispose of old furniture, which was not a problem as the Council heavy squad would take it away.

The sofa only needs to be moved out of his room and through his hall (all in a straight line) and the door to the back courtyard is 4ft from his front door. The heavy squad would pick it up from the courtyard.

Seems quite simple :) but No! Harveys head office told me that their men could not move his old sofa. They gave me two reasons (excuses) which are totally absurd - even if true.

The first was that they couldn't move it as they haven't done a Health & Safety Assessment on the sofa (if that is true :th scifD36: they would have had to do an assessment on it when they brought it in!).

The second was that their men are not insured to move it.

They're furniture movers, for God's sake!!!

They're going to have to get the new sofa off their lorry, through the front door of the flats, along the corridor and into his flat. That's much more than a few feet that it would require to put the old one out the back door. If it's true  then their insurance is rubbish - unless they particularly want it like that so that they can say what they have said to me. :dunno:

I can't even organised the heavy squad to come along at the same time because Harveys' delivery is between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Absolutely atrocious customer (non) service. :gaah: :thud:

So, check what they will do if you want to purchase from them and, maybe, give your custom to a local company who will provide a proper service.

Feel free to post this on your social media. It may give them a kick up the backside.

As a lorry driver you are only insured to do some things, other things you would not be insured to do, H&S was the way of not to do things ;)

I can see both sides to this
Even if you have new carpets, you have to remove the old one first
Lorry drivers which do container are not aloud to help off load them, but some do for abit of cash ;)
That the problem with having contacts, it's not part of the/my job

Is the old sofa good enough to stick on freecycle and get someone to take?

Agreed but they would be bringing in a sofa, sold by them, and taking out a sofa, sold by them. :wallbanging:

          Exactly :dbgrtmb:

We've had new carpets and new furniture in the past. The shop has always taken the old ones out before putting in the new ones. :dunno:

It may have been passable but it had to be taken apart to get out of the flat and it's dumped in the open. We even had to take the front door off. :rolleyespink: The men that delivered it brought in the new one, in pieces (it is a motorised recliner), and had to take the door off!!!

I know some companys that will bring you new stuff and will only put it inside the front or back door and that it, the rest is up to you, even with beds

times money, and as they sold it they knew they would have to take it apart

From a distance, this strikes me as a case where the company may have had issues in the past with handling old/used furniture. Perhaps they had the misfortune to pick up a piece of furniture that was infested. Then the bugs invaded the new furniture in the lorrie. Or worse, hitched rides home with the moving men? In this case, they would experience considerable losses, particularly if they delivered that newly infested new furniture to the next customer and so on and so on.

              Just my humble opinion.. :)

@CanadianLori They weren't being asked to take the furniture away and it would have been nowhere near their vehicle. So not the slightest chance of any infestation.

They were being asked to move it 4ft from the front door of the flat. The door to the rear courtyard of the flats is just 4ft from the door of the flat. The delivery vehicle would be parked on the road, 20ft from the front door of the building and then another 20ft to his front door.

They would not have been able to even bring the new one in without moving the old one.

@Jiffy you are obviously agreeing with me that they now try any excuse not to give what would usually be considered good customer service. :blue thumb:

That's why I headed the thread the way I did and why I am warning people to check things before they buy.

What used to be considered normal customer service seems to now be non-service. :dunno:

Yes, things change, even some companys use agency drivers which will have there own rules and H&S and insurances
                  Differant people differant rules
One company i worked for bought in a new guy and he changed things over night, next day we could only do half the work we used to do because he changed the rules then had a go at us for not doing the days work, so look for another job

I've spoken to four local furniture shops and they have all said that they still move old furniture out if the customer asks them to. None of them take the old furniture away but three of them said that they would arrange for charity shops to come and collect. :dbgrtmb:

Now that's what I call good service. :yay:

You're correct then. They are just being lazy and using "new rules" to get away with it.

Had a similar thing with Harveys. Bought a new 3 piece from them. Was also told they were not insured to remove the old suite. With her next breath the woman said, we charge £20 to take the old one.lol lol lol

A lot of Charities won't take any three piece suites etc if they don't have fire retardant labels on them as we found out when clearing out my late father in laws house the other year. His three piece suite was 35 years old:sad:

When we ordered our new three piece three years ago from Harvey's we new that no one would want it as the cats we had rescued at the time had used it as a scratching post when it was fairly new:gaah:and one of the springs had started to come through the material so Mr Kandy chopped and sawed it up,we put it into the back of our car and took it to the tip so there were just empty spaces where the new one was going to go:biggrin:

Unfortunately, the person that owned the sofa is disabled and has nobody that could help him move it or dispose of it. Harveys were told this but they didn't care. They still kept spouting their ridiculous 'rules'.
