Honeysuckle

I just bought a small Honeysuckle shrub for under £2 in a local supermarket, thinking how lovely it would be to have some Honeysuckle in the garden. But, when I got it home and read up about it, I found out it can grow up to 10ft tall!!! Now I don't know what to do, because although our garden isn't tiny, that is a bit too tall for the space we have.


Does anyone have one and prune it to keep it a decent size??

 

Sally, honeysuckles are not all the same. Some are scented some are not; some flower on current season's wood others flower on last year's wood; some are evergreen some are not. Some are "tidy" some are almost invasive.
So Sally....what variety is it?

 

Is the sky not the limit? I grow mine on a 7 foot frame. It has 4 sides and I let it scramble. But you can cut back if needed, after flowering. Which type do you have?

 

The really funny thing is, we are in a housing association property and we have already planted (This is just the larger growing shrubs and trees) a Forsythia, a Yew (This is only a few inches tall at the moment), a Snowball Verburnam, a Birch, a Pyracanthea, a Berberis and a Verburnam Bodnamtense too! This is our first ever garden and we went a bit mad because it was so bare and open and we just wanted some lovely trees and shrubs around us!

Don't know what it's going to be like when they're all grown up, if we're still alive!!!! Just hope they don't ever sell the property!!

 

Just looked at the packaging and it says 'Repens' and that it grows to 6m! Wish I had noticed that before we bought it!

 

Ok Sally, you can prune it after flowering to keep it in check. Tie down lower stems too to encourage density from ground level
