First up I used the spring cartridge in the machine to heavy rake the lawn and collect stones and rubbish up. Next up came the big guns blade really tearing it up on the full depth setting. Now I know this is too harsh for most but with 20 kg of grass seed on hand I’m no novice to this and wanted to show others that sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. Finally the lawn was aerated and sharp sand cast across the area, the area has been pre treated with granular fert 2 weeks ago. Last up using a drop spreader about 10kg of grass seed was spread in both directions to ensure good coverage. When I remove the poly tunnel in next 2 weeks I will do the small patch under that. Now I’m sure some will jump in and say where I’ve not followed the usual way and they would be totally right, this post is for those who worry about tackling the grass for fear of ruining it so I will update this over the next few weeks to give comfort for those who have never scarified and renovated before as I’ve had some great info from everyone here and thought it’s time to give something back.

As someone with no grass (hence the user name!) I look forward to seeing how you get on with this. I do plan to have a bit of grass at some point, but need to wait for the decking to break and die first. Thanks for showing us.

E98DB9C7-0F74-4CDE-A97D-8FCF4F3F9B10.jpeg Really quick pic been proper busy this weekend and on nights this week. The grass has got really long and we haven’t had rain for 17 days or nights so will be a while before I start to bring it down to it’s proper height. The seed has taken well and has had a lot of foot traffic while it was growing which surprisingly hasn’t done much harm. You can see the beginning if the tiki bar in the pic as well. Will update this properly when it’s cut and had some rain for the final result.

Hi any updates on this? I renovated last year with the exception of relieving compaction. Mine looked as bare as yours but came up really well. Over winter the lawn got no chance to dry out and Moss was just as bad as ever this spring. With other projects on the go this year I just couldn’t dedicate the time or money to do the same again.

I’m in two minds to do this just before the autumn again with the additional steps of punch aerating and top dressing but I don’t want to be wasting my time.

Really quick update and pic taken few weeks ago the prolonged heat has taken its toll. So doesn’t look as good at moment, but I’m confident it will come back just fine

My lawns are still pretty green ...yep, they are watered now and then....but the early rain and odd showers promised should lush them up beautifully for now :)

However, if it continues to be hot and dry I have decided not to water the grass; down here we get sea mists in September enough to keep grass green so let's see what August does!

Grass will recover though but recently turfed lawns need to be kept watered as they are unlikely to recover. It would be a waste if an expensive turf was lost because of a lack of water

Nothing like someone beating a lawn rather than a lawn beating them hahahaha
