I don't often join a rather heated debate but on this occasion I really do know what I am talking about. I was a professional tennis player for about 7 years and played at Wimbledon twice plus represented my country at junior and county level. I have given birth naturally (not by caesarean section which would be an advantage to returning to top sport, I will NOT go into the details of why:yikes:). Playing top class tennis is nothing like playing golf (play that too but not at the same level as tennis).
Serena Williams is without a doubt the best female tennis player of all time., better than Martina Navratilova, Margaret Court, who I know personally and she agrees Serena is the best ever or even Suzanne Lenglen if you follow tennis and know who she was.
To play the game that Serena does she HAS to be big. The whole reason she is the best ever is she is incredibly strong with huge legs. Where does the power to play her magnificent service come from...her legs. Yes she may be a yard or so short of speed in comparison to how she was (so is Federer) but hell she is 36 and a MUM. Who on this earth is still as quick at 36? Even Usain Bolt slowed down after he got over the 30 mark.
No doubt most MEN would like to see the likes of Maria Sharapova play, being all pretty and slim. Her service is pathetic in comparison to Serena's.
Serena had a difficult birth, I have experience of that and was never the same afterwards...again will not to into details but the Mum's on GC will know what I mean:).
Did I like the all in 1 Serena is playing in? No but I am old fashioned. Maybe the youth of today might like it. It will be comfortable as there will be no restriction around the waist which can be uncomfortable if you wear a shirt/shorts and a top. Post giving birth she may well need to wear more underwear and finds the all in 1 suit better for her...this is a guess. The rest of what I have said in not.
You may remember that ghit John Inverdale making an extremely nasty comment about Bartoli who won Wimbledon. Please remember female tennis players are just that not some skinny catwalk model.
Perhaps in future stick to watching golf....oh perhaps not as our most distinguished female golfer for many years is Laura Davies who is decidedly on the large side. Better just watch the men play altho some of the top golfers are no oil paintings either.

An interesting post, but who mentioned golf?

The "cat suit," won't be making an appearance at Wimbledon. Each player has to submit in advance the exact details of what they want to wear for approval by the Wimbledon committee responsible for the dress code. Serena has has already submitted hers. Nothing feline about it.

Maria Sharapova, hasn't done much for years. Despite being banned she wasn't dropped by her sponsor, that's the power of advertising. Maria has earned far more from sponsorship than she ever has on the court.

I've never been a fan of hers, I much prefer Caroline Wozniacki, who has made great strides in regaining her seeding places since being dumped by Rory McIlroy.

Personally, I believe the sponsors in some instances have too much influence over those who wear their kit, or advertise their products.

Overheard passing motorist asking the old boy at the end of our lane ''can you tell me where this road goes to mate?''
Old boy replied ''I bin livin 'ere for 63 years, an it aint gone nowhere yet''

Dunno about roads, but some people never travel very far.

It's decades ago, still new to the area but I was working in Ashton-Under-Lyne for a week and needed to go to Oldham. I'd got a rough idea where it was, but not having a Manchester A to Z, stopped my car to ask a young man for directions. He replied, "It's straight up this road. I've never been there myself, but I'm sure you'll find it." I thanked him and went on my way.

It's actually a distance of less than five miles.

That reminds me of a giggle we had when I was in hospital - there was an elderly gent (92) with dementia in the bed next to mine; for the most part, he didn't make a lot of sense, but on occasion he would pull things out of nowhere. Each time the nursing staff gave medication, they had to check our wrist bands and ask our date of birth to ensure that they were giving the drugs to the right person; one particular HCA, who only arrived in the UK from Italy 9 months ago, was giving this gent some medicine - as her English wasn't the best, she asked "What is your birthday?"

                  "14th July" he replied.

                  "What year?" she asked

                  "This year...." he said..........

Mrs C and I creased with laughter at this - lets face it, he wasn't wrong!

Funny you should ask this @ARMANDII:). I was at school with David Graveney (nephew of Tom) and Peter Roebuck (played for Somerset). I'd often go and practise slip catching with them as in many ways I wish I'd played cricket instead of tennis but not many girls played the game in my day. I did play in a few house matches, not easy to run in borrowed pads about a foot too big for me:) but at least I didn't need to wear a box!:snorky:

Seems like you didn`t have many giggles while you were in hospital FC. I`m sure we are all very very glad that you are back at home now. Always good if we can hang on to a sense of humour - there is always something to smile about if you look hard enough aye :blue thumb:

My favourite hospital story involves our daughter (a girl with a similar personality to mine) who was a GOS trained nurse. She later went to another London hospital to head up a children's ward which catered mostly for kids with meningitis. On one evening, when there was not much happening on the ward, she got an urgent phone call asking if she'd come down and help out in casualty which had suddenly become very busy.
An RTA had come in who was being examined by three new young doctors, (she said you can always recognise them, as they're the ones with a big medical book in their coat pockets). As they were discussing the patient, she barged through them, saying, "While your deciding his treatment, how about we see if we can get him breathing first?"
