I know mate but when I see something I like up garden centre's the price doesn't matter as long as i'm able to get it while it's there...as I don't venture out often

I usually have to pull the hubby out by a collar and chain just to get there besides threatening behaviour [IMG] ;)

Slugs or snails Gail. Catch em tonight. And you will need to keep Victoria constantly well watered :)

I agree with verdun , slugs & snails have a taste for them unfortunately. I planted one out the other day, need to get more. £1.15 in a 9cm pot or £1 if i buy 10 pots at localish nursery , £11 is extortionate but I see more and more plants around £9.99 these days in GC

[IMG]Verdun, I thought so...it only started the middle of this week, hubby wouldn't have it and I said somethings eating it most likely slugs because with a torch and spec's on it looks like small square chunks.
It's watered daily the growing rate is good besides the middles, is there anything for slugs I can put around which doesn't hurt the plant please. :)

Morning Gail , I think I've put this somewhere else as well ....... See if you can get any used coffee grounds and sprimkle a little around your plants. That's all I've used this year and we haven't had a single slug or snail. If you put them around your boundary fences/hedges etc as well it stops them coming into your garden at all. There are some good articles on the t'innternet about using them.
PS.... you usually find coffee shops give bags away. We get ours from pur local coffee shop for nowt :)

If you're absolutely desperate you can make some medium strength coffee in a jug and then once it's gone cold pour that into the ground around the plants ( just into the soil around them, don't water the plants with it ).
I don't know about Nescafe ( i thought that was instant ) but as long as it's got a coffee smell about it ( that's what they don't like ) it should work good.

I'll have to try coffee grounds :). I can grow most everything here without slugs damaging them...touch wood!
There is nothing as effective as going out at night and picking the pests off. A few weeks ago a canna growing off the beaten track was chewed almost to ground level; not part of my nightime visit but is now. It has recovered to stand 90 cm plus.
In my experience, the damage is caused by just a few, even one or two, pests; get rid of them and the plants flourish.

If there was one method above all else we would all use it Gail. :noidea:Fact is slugs n snails will always be a major problem. Even the garlic spray is hit and miss:noidea:
With the night patrols, I found they are more important in early spring; this time of year, numbers were reduced, plants are less soft and air drier. I have a reasonably large garden but it doesnt take me long, 2 evenings or so a week, to keep on top of things.
"Cuckoo land" Gail? The Land of Nod for me! :)

Excuse the pun @Verdun and @KFF ….this is my 3 prolonged attack to try and solve the slugs from eating out at my expense.
I have used fence prickle fence strips, granulated coffee and lavender for my defence attack and a night rota as been drawn up between myself and hubby for night watch :th scifD36:
