Bell Pepper

Wow I'm literally gob smacked I've grown this Pepper. I had a problem with lots of little buds dropping but then this one appeared and has been getting bigger. I think I may have another 2 - fingers crossed.

I'm well pleased, especially when this is my first growing season.

Well done, @jane0o0! You must be delighted and it looks a good size. I've had similar success: this is my first year growing them, but I have 15 thriving plants now! I've picked a few but I'm not sure whether I should have yet. They taste great!

 

Yeah its very exciting and my first year growing anything also. Great feeling isn't it.

Yeah, I have 12 tomato plants, Cucumber, Courgettes, Runner Beans. What you got growing Irmemac

 

Nice! You'll be looking forward to harvesting that lot. I've got 10 tomato plants and my strawberries are just recently finally shed. Next year I will definitely try some other things.

 

Some of my tomato plants are taking ages to grow let alone ripen lol How are yours doing?

 

Hi Jane, hope your tomato plants put on a growth spurt soon. My Moneymakers have grown very well, and I have a good crop of tomatoes, although they are currently all green. I also have 5 Cherry Babies, which are much shorter and have less clusters of fruit. I don't know whether this is normal for them or not. My greenhouse is only 6x8' so next year I think I will only grow six plants instead of ten as they have taken up a lot of space.

Was in my greenhouse earlier with a cuppa, looking up at the 4 toms plants now right up to the ridge and coming back down again and thinking that despite a slow start its really been a good crop; apart from a standard size Shirley the other are all cherries.

Also tried 3 types of outdoor toms including Tumbling Tom and they have also give an abundant crop , even the neighbours don't want any more at the moment, so afraid some are going on the compost heap as I'm not a chutney maker.

I did try a belated mini cucumber, which produced two small fruits but not very tastey, but if you don't try ...

That said , it did make me wonder how your crop has been going on after your problematic beginning ? Have yours finally turned into a bumper harvest ?

 

Thought I'd update you all on my tomato growing. Quite a lot are still green and some small they are still growing. I've had some good big ones especially off my Cherokee Smokey Purple which taste absolutely lovely. Hope I've still got time for them to grow and ripen as weather has been pants here in Newcastle. For my first year growing anything I think its ok lol





















I did have this happen to 3 of my San Marzano but rest seem fine.

You have done a great job your plants are looking healthy and loads of toms, you should be proud of your efforts.
To answer your questions I live not far from you Co Durham and I find toms in greenhouse go on ripening into October with any luck and even into November in a good year so plenty of time to get a lot more ripe fruit.
Also at the end of the season you can pick all the fruit that has shown any colour change and they will ripen indoors, even if they have just turned a light green.
The blossom end rot in your San Marzano is nothing to worry about if it is only a few toms, those type of toms, plums / large types are susceptible to it.

Just picked my first Pepper, it was left to ripen enough to save seeds from it.

This is the smallest, there's larger ones to come, which should have been even bigger, but I received the seeds about 2 months past the best sowing time.

At last I'm getting better Peppers than the tiddly ones previously grown from 'Californian Wonder' seeds, the majority of which were still green at the end of season. Think I've finally cracked it.

Has anybody saved Bell Pepper plants over winter, in the same way as Chillies, to get a head start the following year?

Calcium feed will prevent blossom end rot that plum tomatoes are prone to.

 

Thanks Sandy, Good news then that we may all be able to pick right into October. The weather is meant to be warming up again end of September if the forecasters are correct. I've just picked my first bell pepper and although its meant to be a purplish colour I got impatient and couldn't wait lol My Cherokee Smokey Purple are delish and will def be growing again next year. Hope you get plenty tomatoes yourself.
