Can someone identify this shrub please and tell me what I can do to help it - I couldn't find a section for Shrubs specifically. It's part of a small hedge comprised of Heather, Skimmia and something with a variegated leaf I don't recognize. The entire hedge was very overgrown with brambles until recently. Since being cut back and brambles removed it's apparently now decided to die . It's been watered and we've also had rain. No idea why this is happening. Can I save it??

Hello @luciusmaximus lovely to see you on mate ;)...I've not got a clue...i'll leave that more to the experts on hedge plants...i'm useless with ID unless I've had the plant before :)

It may be dying mate with the sun exposure which is showing even though your watering it but it does look a colourful bush to me, unless it's my eyes :dunno:

Could be a Hebe, but the image is so unclear it could almost br anything.

      Any chance of another pic?

Not very clear picture but the green bits look rather like rosemary?

I would cut all the branches that are dead off. There's still plenty of green on there. Keep it damp ( not wet ) and give it a week feed.

Are you gardening on acid soil @luciusmaximus ? I ask as you say this is growing with heather and skimmia. The hebes prefer neutral to alkaline. The smaller leaved hebe is generally hardier than those with bigger leaves.
This plant is very easy to propagate, and there is quite a lot of material there that is suitable I think. If it were mine I would take a dozen or so cuttings, and then chop the whole thing down to about 6 inches to see if there`s any new growth. Hebe will regenerate well if in the right position.

I think Tetters may well be right lucius about soil alkilinity but esp about taking cuttings. Do it now for it to root before the onset of winter :)

Thanks for the replies. The hedge was planted by one of the previous owners, no idea when but quite some time ago . I imagine if it didn't like it's position then there would have been problems with it before now :dunno:. It just seems odd that only the Hebe is affected, the Skimmia, Heather and other variegated leaf plant are all ok. The Hebe was doing ok until the hedge was cut and brambles removed . The soil has not been disturbed as I cut brambles down to ground level and will continue to do so until they give up.

Might be worth checking that Hebe for scale insects as I've known an infestation of them cause dieback.
