Can someone tell me what this is please and how to help it? Not sure if I should attempt to cut out the dead bits now or wait until leaves fall off or next Spring?

      Looks like a variegated Poplar.
I'd take out the dead bits now, to good wood with a clean cut.
Might be less easy to spot the wood from the tree in mid winter. :)

Gail your pic is Tulip tree, Liriodendron, know as Poplar sometimes, but related to Magnolia.

That pic by luciusmaximus is, I believe Poplar as in Populus.

Also @luciusmaximus a lot of our smaller garden trees are suffering drought conditions this year after a dry winter and our frazzling summer.. One of the ways they deal with it is to cut off supplies usually to the furthest distant branches first.. Prune as per Pete’s instructions..
