Tomato Grafting

    I find that light is the most important thing after 2 days, the growing tip needs to kick into life and photosynthesise otherwise it will die. The processes of photosynthesis/transpiration pulls water from the rootstock up and through the graft. If that doesn't happen within the first few days it will fail.

        Well not looking too bad now for first time trial. Have potted on 10 out of 24 that are out of the incubator will do the rest tomorrow. So 24 out of 32 is 75% success. Will probably leave in greenhouse under fleece to be watered a couple of times while I am away.
        In one utube video, the man said he lets the side shoot below the first truss develop so he gets thee equivalent of 2 plants on one rootstock. Does anyone else do this or would it depend on the rootstock used.

        I sometimes let one side shoot develop but it obviously needs twice the space of a single stemmed plant. The side shoots are never as vigorous as the main stem so it's not something I would normally do, but if you have bought expensive already grafted plants then letting a side shoot develop would give you a bigger crop overall for less outlay.

        My leggy experimental tomatoes have finally been planted outside today.

        Snackbite Sweet Pepper grafted onto Morrisons "Grape" Cherry Tomato, yes, the picture and video elusive Pepmato.

        So far, the grafts have healed and the pepper scions were growing towards the sun whilst the plants were being hardened off.

        Scions 2 and 4 seem the most promising, whereas, 1 seems to be affected by cold and 3 sustained a rupture to the stem during detangling from the seedling tray.

          So far, scion 1, as expected, has withered away.

          However, scion 3 seems to have recovered and is doing really well, in fact, even better than 2 and 4.

                There was talk of gardeners' delight not being as tasty this past couple of years. Well, last year they were great. This year it wont be long before the fruits turn red and I will know if they are up to the mark or not:)
                This has been an interesting and informative thread and I will try one or two varieties suggested here next year:)
