What to plant?

We're keen to make a small vegetable patch to start growing our own but are after some advice on where to begin! What are the best veg to start off with, that are easy to look after and will grow quite quickly, to give us a bit of encouragement to get going?!

what do you like to eat? If you enjoy any of the following, go for them- easy and quick

Radishes (all colours and shapes)
Lettuce (mixed, buy several packets of all kinds)
Swiss chard (pretty and tasty)
Beans (beautiful plants)
Beetroot for baby crops
Herbs (chives, dill.... )
Strawberries

If you have a sheltered spot, or even a blowaway greenhouse, mini tomatoes are easy and great freshly picked. You can sow seeds indoors now, or buy plug plants.

Personally I would not grow cabbages nor cauliflowers (fiddly, slow, prone to problems and Tesco sells excellent quality for pennies), onions (same reason but also take too much space) and potatoes apart from one bucketful. With very limited space I want to focus on something delicious and fun.

I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you grow, and the actual process of learning and doing. And even if something doesn't grow as well as expected, something else will.

 

Dwarf beans - much better picked fresh than imported from Kenya! If you have a bit more space, try growing a courgette plant (just one!) - you'll get plenty from it.

 

Thanks so much for the ideas - yes, definitely with you on the need for growing things that are fun and delicious! Lots of these ideas have me feeling hungry, so time to get planting!!
