On a journey I do a lot, I keep seeing an old tractor tyre painted white and filled with colourful plants. I’m up for doing something like this, perhaps just with a normal car tyre though.

Anyone done it? If so what type of paint do use you, and do you prime it first? All I know is to paint it a light colour as black gets too hot & can damage the plants!

I guess you just push some kind of wooden base into the lip of the tyre and drill holes in it. Is there much more to it than that?

There used to be a craze for using a car tyre and turning it inside out with one side still attached to a wheel.
Not seen that for a while.

Sounds dangerous, even more so if planted up with Petunias

Even old vynle records have been re shaped to make containers, planters.

If I may. That picture of the punctures tyre. Such an event can be dangerous, especially at high speed and on caravans. Fitting Tyrone Bands to the wheels prevent this. In the case of a blow out, the rim of the tyre is prevented from sinking into the well of the rim. Most police and emrgency vehicles are so fitted.

Tyres can be used to create ponds too. I think there was someone on here awhile back who did that. I remember the photos but not the member's name.

I finally did it! Here is my lime green spray painted tyre ready to plant in. I used some offcuts of wood to make a base to keep the compost in. After taking the pic, I drove another piece of wood across those to hold them all together, then drilled some drainage holes.

I will be placing it on a bark covered area & so the colours should really pop! I have some gorgeous petunias to fill it with soon & will add a pic when they have taken off.

It was wonderful to see how just a few plants could make a tyred corner look great:

This part of the community garden is known as Jane's Tyred Corner. Sadly, it's currently a little bit overgrown as she is no longer around (gone to pastures new..., in the sky) to look after it but we'll be replanting the tyres soon.

I've seen pictures of them used for a potato planter. As the plant grows, they added another tire and more dirt. Then at harvest, dismantled the stack.
