Best Honeysuckle?

Is there a particular variety that is best for scent? And is now a good or bad time to get one?

 

Two for me are Serotina....best flowers too....and Graham Thomas Cindy
Yep, good time to plant one too.

A word of caution, Serotina suffers from mildew if grown in hot dry conditions so your aspect makes a difference.

I assume you will be planting in the garden and not in a pot

Scent is very subjective though

Not all honeysuckles are scented

 

Im considering getting 2. One would be in a big pot and one in the ground. All the gardening programmes seem to say there isn't much you cant grow in a pot as long as its big and good quality soil and you don't let it dry out and keep it fed. Is that right? Ive looked at garden express site and they have Lonicera periclymenum Serotina honeysuckle on very special offer. Gonna get one of their Daphne too as on offer. This will be my last attempt at mail order but as the place has been recommended I'll give it a go

 

I like Belgica, nice flowers and scent.

I’ve found honeysuckles don’t do well in pots probably because there is a tendency for pots to dry out at times. They like cool moist roots in shade.

 

I grew a honeysuckle in a pot very successfully for a number of years. After the first year, it had obviously grown through the drainage hole, (the pot was sitting on gravel against the house) as I could not move it. Then early this year it upped and died - and the pot always seemed to have standing water in it. When I finally managed to move it, the main root had grown so big it had blocked the drainage hole, so it had drowned itself.

Whilst I am trying again to grow in a pot in the same location, I have chosen a wooden barrel. This way the wood will give way, if the drainage hole becomes blocked again, or I can drill a secondary hole in the side of the barrel...

 

Ground is always best though

By the way, at a recent big tv show a dwarf honeysuckle was displayed....at least I think it was a honeysuckle.....that is perfect for pots I’ll google

I have Graham Thomas over an archway. Last evening the scent was wonderful

I grow a shrubby “honeysuckle” here ....evergreen bushy plant with scented flowers in winter....Lonicera Purpusii Winter Beauty.

Sometimes, though, we can’t grow a honeysuckle in the ground where we want to have a honeysuckle. Take my door, as an example. We have tarmac up to the house walls for 2/3 of the length of the house. The bottom 1/3 length is white stone “gravel” for a metre up to the house walls, then lawn. So nowhere to plant next to the house...
Hence my warning about honeysuckles and pots. If you grow them in pots, they may try to find their way out the bottom, and if it’s a ceramic pot, there may be trouble ahead!
