    Hi

I don’t know name of this houseplant. I got a cutting of it from existing plant in July and it has been growing well

However even though it does still seem to be growing; over last couple weeks I have noticed that leaves on it are dying and falling off – leaves and soil in container seem to have like white bits appearing on them

Is the plant diseased and I should just bin it or can it be saved or is it alright and nothing wrong with it at all

    See attached Pics

    What do people think?

    Thanks

The plant is Coleus. Either you took rather a large cutting or it has grown rapidly. The white stuff is too small to identify at this point.

I would reduce the height xhalf, this will encourage branching. Coleus are seasnal plants, so I respectfully suggest a bit of reading up and check the required growing conditions. Hope this helps.

      Hi,

They look like an infestation of Whitefly / Aphids where their skin castes and dead ones have dropped onto the compost.

The normal treatment is a bug spray, but this time of year we would bin the whole plant as Coleus are best treated as an annual, unless you want to try and keep it in the house all winter, though it will have been really weaken by the current attack and some plants react badly to some bug sprays.

Also inspect and treat any nearby plants as they will probably have already spread.
Check the underside of the leaves as its there where they prefer to hide.

Personally I hate giving up on plants. I grow a lot of Coleus and root all cuttings in water. If it was my plant I would use the lower growth in pic one as cuttings. Washing each segment thoroughly to remove any bugs ( even if none can be seen ) and then place then in water at a depth that doesn't cover any leaf. Refresh the water each week and check the health of each cutting, remove any leaf that looks to be dying. The cuttings should root within a couple of weeks.
        Good luck @Passport1 :dbgrtmb:

If you have heated greenhouse/s then you can't go wrong. Coleus cuttings basically take all year around can be kept going. For the grower/provider. This is a much more positive method of growing other than seeding.

Thanks Upsydaisy...Do you mean that I take Individual healthy leaves and their stem from the plant and clean them and place them in water or do I take a few healthy leaves and their associated main stem of the plant and place that in water? Thanks

Thanks all replies and info.. There weren't any leaves vibrant n healthy enough to put in water to root per suggestion

I cut back the main stem to remove all big leaves and will see how leaves at base grow out, looks like attached now

                Thank all

A method I have often used if & when rooting cuttings in water. Avoid long stems, so that when the rooted cutting is potted up, the lowest leaves are quite close to the compost.
Try using a jar, cover the top/opening with cling film or similar. Make holes in the film large enough to poke the stem of the cutting through, and let the cutting rest on thge power leaves. Fill the jar with tepid water so that the cut ends of the cuttings are just submerged. Top up when needed.

I do exactly the same @Mike Allen but instead of using cling film I criss cross elastic bands over the pot of water to support the cuttings, I find this is easier to refresh the water.:)
