Being elderly we find the thought of this virus a bit worrying as its our age group more likey to suffer most from such things.

Despite the media coverage have yet to hear anything about what form of treatment those affected are receiving in UK hospitals.

Equally no mention of folk in China who have been treated and have recovered (?) other than 99% do not die.

I think at the moment there is no specific treatment, antivirals may help, but have side effects. So I think that they just treat the various symptoms as and when they occur and let your body deal with it.

Rickey. I can understand your thoughts and feelings. I too am what you may class as an oldie. Honestly. NO I am not worried concerning myself.
Please try and relax. Listen carefully to whatever authorative advice is given out and act upon it.

We older ones shouldnt need to worry about this particular virus, as we should be immune! After all, we did drink plenty of this...

Is that the case with this virus? Sometimes older people have some form of resistance from previous, similar versions of a virus, whilst younger ones have had no contact with anything remotely similar. Didn't Spanish Flu kill younger people? But I can't find anything about which groups are at most risk.

                A bit off point.
There is sure going to be a shortage of stuff ,as nearly everything around seems to be made in China.

I do wonder if the media are making a bit more of this than is necessary to be honest - yes, it is severe, but the death rate for flu seems to be considerably higher than this virus, unless of course it is early days?

As far as I can see the main problem is it's a virus that has started spreading from person to person as opposed
I think the big thing is that its new in how it is spreading from person to person, appears to have started out as a bird type flu.
I've just been reading that there are lots of corona viruses that cause the common cold and flus, but this is one that has been know for a long time, and presumably it's mutated.

I just think the world health people expect some major worldwide killer epidemic to break out at some point and they get a bit jumpy when this kind of thing happens.

Consider this. Since the outbreak of the virus, most foreign nationals have been evacuated home, and put in quarantine. The Chinese have not only cordoned off the main source of the outbreak, but also built from the ground up a new hospital to take care of their people.

What has the WHO done? Taken until yesterday to give the virus an official name! As the old saying goes, "actions speak louder than words." Is there anyone that still respects an organisation that has not done any practical thing to prevent the virus?

They have already said that they expect this sort of thing to happen more frequently.

Health authorities have improved vaccines and health care but they always seem to be caught on the hop at this time of year.

It's just over 100 years since the 1918/19 'Spanish' Flu epidemic that is thought to have killed up to 50 million people. :hate-shocked:

To be honest, I am surprised we don't see more of it - think about how many people are globe-trotting nowadays compared to 100 years ago for a starter for ten; add onto that the number of viruses that are deliberately created or mutated (the current variety allegedly being one of them) mostly in the name of creating vaccines or understanding what the future may be like, and that sort of work always carries some risk.

Maybe it is our lifestyles that have to change - we travel the world in great big enclosed tubes in the air (although the ventilation systems on modern jets means that they are probably one of the safest places to be - but the airports most definitely aren't); or we go around in massive ships (something like 7000 people still stuck on that cruise ship in Japan, which is now essentially just a massive floating petridish), and of course domestically trains and buses, and many of those journeys are likely not necessary.
