    Morning folks,

A few more from my garden that I would appreciate some support with as I put together my 'garden inventory'.

I have very little knowledge and so want to get a head start this year to ensure the garden is looked after.

I have sketched out my garden and creating a file with all the useful information I have gathered far.

The first picture is for the tree on the left - the picture was taken last year, however it is still completely bare at the moment.

    Thanks in advance.

Brilliant, thank you so much for the speedy responses guys. I honestly don’t know what I would do without the wealth of knowledge and friendly folks on this forum.

That gives me some bedtime reading tonight.

@Rikki McNeill - in the first picture, do you mean the purple bush next to the conifer? If you mean the plant cut off on far left of photo, can't really see it. But the HUGE purple tree is a copper beech I think.

Yeah that's the one Caroline, the one in front of the door.

I looked up Copper beech and it suggests that it would retain its leaves throughout winter, where as my one is completely bare..

I will try get another closer photo in the morning.

            Thanks :)

Ah I thought you meant the tree behind the house to the left of the garage - that is the copper beech. If the purple bush at the front has little pink flowers in spring, it might be prunus pissardi

                Errr! Confused!!!!

1A ....Tree to left of pic is Fagus sylvatica atropurpurea...commonly called copper beech.
Bare just now. It is deciduous.
1B....In the centre of your pic....The shrub with purple leaves near the front door maybe.... Cotinus coggygria purpureus..smoke bush.
It will also be bare just now.

                2. One of the purple leaves Elders..Sambucus.
                3. Need clear pics of the leaves. Cotoneaster sp...possibly.

\\:wow: I don't know how I didn't manage to notice that in the picture, I was too focused on the front stuff! However that is another added to the list - the copper beech has given me hours of tidy up work this year, it has dropped what feels like millions of nasty little 'shells?' all over the back garden.

Brilliant, thank you so much and sorry for the confusion :)

I will snap a close up today.

Daft question, how on earth do you build up the knowledge of all the very strange and wonderful plant names?!

                  Very slowly.
                  Plant at a time.
                  Take pics and start looking.
                  Still learning every day.

Your Beech tree..these are the seed pods...called Beech masts...hard outer shell that contains the smaller seeds inside. Last year was a good year.

I feel it may be a slow process! However, feeling a bit more confident already with the information gathered from the forum.

I have taken a few close ups of that green plant for ID if you wouldn't mind.

                    Thanks :)

That looks to be spot on, description on google is a match.

Again, really appreciate the help. Determined to get this garden in shape

To add to @Silver surfer’s ID, right at the base of the cotoneaster is a lime-green plant, which is a welsh poppy. Flowers on and off through the summer, with delicate butter-yellow flowers. Lucky you!!
